MY FRIEND NICK

MY FRIEND NICK

I AM HERE BECAUSE NICK WAS MY FRIEND
I'VE KNOWN HIM FOR EIGHT YEARS

WE WERE DIFFERENT
HE WAS CONSERVATIVE
I AM LIBERAL

BUT WE WERE ACTIVE IN THE LORD'S VINEYARD
AND THAT BOUND US TOGETHER

I DID THE FLASHY JOBS
I PREACHED
SANG IN THE CHOIR
PRESIDED AT SERVICE

NICK DID THE QUIET JOBS
THE CAN BOXES OUT IN THE ENTRYWAY
ARE A TESTAMENT TO HIM
AND TO HIS WIFE BETTY
WHO DID THIS UNGLAMOROUS JOB
THEY GATHERED THE BOTTLES THE PEOPLE BROUGHT
TOOK THEM TO THE RECYCLING AGENCY
RECEIVED MONEY

AND WITH THAT MONEY
THE CHILDREN'S GYM OUTSIDE WAS BUILT
A VCR WAS PURCHASED
NOW THE MONEY IS GOING TO THE ALTAR SOCIETY
THEY HELPED WITH THE CLEANING
THEY HELPED IN THE KITCHEN
THEY KEPT THE KITCHEN AND CHURCH SUPPLIED

NICK WORKED QUIETLY AND DILIGENTLY IN THE LORD'S VINEYARD
AS A CONGREGATION I THINK WE CAN HONESTLY SAY TO HIM
WELL DONE GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT
WELL DONE
